Terms and conditions
The rules that decide whether a claim is paid. We say these before you sign, not after.
These terms apply to every burial plan and cash benefit policy sold by Cudos Funerals Pty Ltd, of 159 Ditike Street, Khubvi, Thohoyandou, 0984. Your policy schedule may add to these terms; where the two differ, the policy schedule governs.
1. Joining
- The joining age is 18 years. The upper joining age for the main member is 80 years.
- Extended family members may be added up to 94 years of age, at the rates published on the cash benefits page.
- No joining fee is charged and no medical examination is required.
- A policy is registered once we hold your full names and your ID number, and the first premium has been received.
- You must tell us the truth about ages and relationships. A policy obtained on false information may be cancelled and claims declined.
2. Waiting periods
A waiting period is the time between the start of your policy and the date a benefit becomes claimable. It is calculated from the date the first premium is received.
- Natural death: a full 6-month waiting period applies.
- Accidental death: a 1-month waiting period applies.
- Suicide: a 24-month waiting period applies.
- Members added to an existing policy serve their own waiting period from the date they are added.
Cover starts once the first premium is received and the waiting period for that benefit has passed. No benefit is payable for a death that occurs during a waiting period.
3. Premiums
- Premiums are payable monthly, in advance, on the date agreed with you.
- Premiums may be paid by Debi Check debit order, by card swipe at the office, or at any of our partner tills, apps and banks. We do not accept cash.
- A payment made without your Cudos payment reference cannot be matched to your policy and the policy will read as unpaid.
- There is no waiver of premiums, at any age or for any reason.
- Premiums may be reviewed from time to time. You will be told in writing before any change takes effect.
4. Lapsing and reinstatement
- Missing your 1st, 2nd or 3rd payment lapses the policy automatically, without notification.
- A lapsed policy pays no benefit for a death occurring after the lapse date.
- A lapsed policy may be reinstated at the office. Waiting periods start again on reinstatement.
5. Claims
To make a claim, phone the office on 066 089 9883. You do not need a policy number to make the first call. The following documents are needed before a claim can be assessed:
- ID of the deceased
- ID of the person making the claim
- Notification of death (BI-1663) from the doctor or the police
- The death certificate, once Home Affairs has issued it
- Proof that the last premium was paid
- Bank details of the beneficiary
Claims are paid within 24 to 72 hours of all documents being received and the claim being approved.
6. Burial plan benefits
- The services listed on your plan are provided by Cudos Funerals and are not exchangeable for cash, except where a cash-back amount is expressly stated.
- Where a family chooses another funeral parlour, Standard pays R2 000 back and VIP pays R3 000 back to the family.
- Vouchers and airtime are provided in the amounts listed on your plan.
- Tombstones included in a plan are carved, engraved and installed by Cudos Funerals. The unveiling date is arranged with the family.
7. Cash benefit policies
- A cash benefit is a payment made to the nominated beneficiary. Cudos Funerals is not obliged to provide any funeral service under a cash benefit policy.
- Cover amounts and monthly payments are those published on the cash benefits page and confirmed on your policy schedule.
- Children’s benefits are payable at the amount applicable to the child’s age at the date of death.
8. Repatriations
- Nationwide road repatriation is quoted from R10 per kilometre, measured from our Khubvi office to the place of collection and back.
- Cross-border and overseas repatriations are quoted per country once the airline, permits and consular requirements are known.
- Quotes are given before travel begins and are not increased afterwards for fuel, tolls or the driver’s time.
9. Cancellation
- You may cancel your policy at any time by telling the office in writing or on WhatsApp.
- Premiums already paid are not refundable, except where the law requires it.
- We may cancel a policy where premiums are not paid, or where the policy was obtained on false information.
10. Complaints
Phone the office first. If a matter is not resolved to your satisfaction, write to info@cudosfunerals.co.za and we must respond in writing. An unresolved complaint may be taken, at no cost to you, to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa.
